Odyssey II: Chapter 4 - Win the War

"Always the voyeur, Lysanna," Maya said, turning to look directly through her sister's magical portal.

"Seramayas. You certainly look comfortable in human skin."

"We land nymphs always have gotten along well with people, unlike those of you from the sea. Perhaps your offspring would have done better had you started with a fish instead."

Lysanna bristled at her sister's words.

Despite all pretences of civility, they were at war and they both knew it very well. With the gods of old dying, the nymphs of the world were fighting for power, position, and continued existence. And to gain anything territory had to be expanded, rivals had to be eliminated, and armies had to be built. There was no time to waste and Lysanna's time was running out.

Lysanna had spread herself too far. Seas she had controlled for centuries were under attack by the combined efforts of celestial and wood nymphs and her efforts to establish a hold on land was dying out. With her long absence from her natural home, Lysanna too was dying. There, at Seramayas' feet rest her last unestablished offspring and her last chance to make her sacrifice worthwhile.

"Poor Lysanna," Maya continued, "always lost for words. Lost for children too, it seems. Shame. But with your little one out of the way and you soon following him-- I must say, you do not look at all well-- my list of enemies will go down and that can never be a bad thing."

"You'll never make it to god status, sister. No matter how hard you try."

"You certainly won't, but I don't see how that dooms me."

At her feet, Paul groaned then screamed. He writhed uncontrollably. At the end of one leg squirmed a glowing tentacle spotted with razor-edged suction cups.

Maya cursed and reached for a fresh needle filled with Proxitol, but the case it was stored in was knocked away by Paul's thrashing. Drug or no drug, his transformation was happening.

"Oh, Seramayas," Lysanna crowed, "you truly are doomed."

As his new mother spoke, Paul's body opened the door behind him and jumped out of the moving van.

Lysanna's energy was too depleted to maintain the link to her child. She would have to trust that he would follow his natural instinct and genetic engineering and find his siblings. They would need one another if they were to win the war.

With that last thought, Lysanna died.
Don't mind me.
