Odyssey II: Chapter 5 – The Hydra Mutation

Maya slashed mercilessly at the tentacles on Paul's back but for each one she hacked off, two more immediately grew.

As she worked, she explained, "If we cannot stop you from being taken over by it, we might as well use you while we can.

"Lysanna's genetically engineered hydra mutation doesn't just speed regeneration, but it also speeds up your lifespan. You will die soon and when you do, our last source of contact with Lysanna will be severed. In short, love, we need you to spy on her."

"It is talking to me and through me. I can't trust either of you," Paul sobbed.

"Do not trust anything it says," Maya warned.

"dO NOt trUST heR," the voice in his head said at the same time.

"You were an accident, Paul," Maya continued. "Lysanna had an intended recipient chosen for her progeny, a human groomed to play host to it, but an ill-timed car accident ruined her plans, causing her to release it randomly in the underground.

"What do you hear now? Is your connection to Lysanna growing stronger each time a piece of you regrows? What does she want from you, love? Tell me. What is her next target? What is she going to do to throw mankind deeper into chaos and eventual destruction? We must know if we are going to stop her."
Nearly one hundred tentacles writhed out of Paul's back by the time Maya finished her questions and put her blade down. She was panting with the exertion and looking anxiously into Paul's face.

He wanted to scream in fear and pain, though he had not actually felt the limbs being removed from his body. He could see them and their tar-like blood on the floor and knew them to be as real as the person before him. The pain Paul felt came instead from the pounding in his head. Something was trying to control him by beating him into submission even as voices whispered and screamed at one another through his mind.

"I cannot trust you," Paul wailed.

"SHe wanTS US alL DEad. SHe IS THe ENEmy," the main voice said as Paul felt it slither through his mind once more. "TRUst us, NOT heR."

"No," Paul screamed. "Maya. Nuclear Transport. Tomorrow. Boom."

"Thank you, Paul. Well done." She took the time to lock his cell once more before rushing to the command center to report, "We have it, Father. The fool has betrayed her."
Hi, again.
